Rio de Janeiro: protests in Morro de Sao Carlos

The demonstrators from the slums torched five buses in different parts of the city after they forced passengers to get out.

The Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Fernando Pezão assigns the violence to the rivalry between gangs of drugs

"We will continue to invest more and we have some great planned operations in which we are going to continue the fight against crime," said Pezão.

The Morro de São Carlos is considered "pacified" and has a pacifying police unit in the neighborhood since May of 2011, under a programme against violence which began in 2008.
