Tribute to the victims of the Heysel Stadium disaster

A tribute to the victims of the Heysel Stadium disaster took place this Friday at the Belgian stadium where, on May 29, 1985, 39 people lost their lives and 600 were injured.

The Heysel tragedy took place in the final of Champions between Juventus and Liverpool.

Most of the victims were Italian. Died crushed by a wall that overthrew under pressure from British hooligans and against the security barriers.

Among the causes of the accident include organisational failures, lack of control at the entrance allowing access to hundreds of people without a ticket, the free sale of alcohol, despite the ban, and Italian supporters, sale on the black market, tickets for an area of the stadium that should be reserved for Belgians.

English clubs were banned from competing internationally for five years and Liverpool for six.
