Mogherini: "Deal with Iran is a historic opportunity to start building confidence"

Hailed by the United States, Europe and Iran, but reviled by Israel, the agreement on nuclear energy is the biggest breakthrough ever in relations between the West and Iran since the 1979 revolution.

At the end of a negotiating marathon, was finally achieved consensus. Iran will continue developing nuclear energy, for peaceful purposes, but is prevented from having a military nuclear program (in other words, the nuclear bomb).

Federica Mogherini, high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and security policy â€" we decided to tackle the recent difficult political problems â€" were more than just a few, six or seven were quite difficult-in together as a package, trying to find balance to keep the nature of the agreement and allow the parties to announce that "this is a good agreement." Has been and continues to be important that this agreement is good for everyone, for all the parties that have signed, but also for the rest of the international community, because these were negotiations that began with a United Nations mandate. So, we're doing all of this not only for the people of our countries, Europe, Iran, United States or others, but on behalf of the entire international community.

Federica Mogherini, high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and security policy-there have been many times when the position looked so different and distant which looked impossible to reach an agreement. But on the other hand, the political will of all involved was very strong, always, as well as the commitment, dedication, will and would also say the sense of responsibility we all brought to the table in order to overcome these difficulties. I think everyone is in agreement with the European Union that this is an historic opportunity to change not only the Iranian issue, the nuclear issue, but also to change the nature of our relationship, to begin to build confidence.

Federica Mogherini, high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and security policy â€" As the European Union and the Member States we have our own way to contribute to the implementation of the agreement. This will be very important. In the future we can work to strengthen political cooperation or the relationship with Iran and we're closer.

Federica Mogherini, high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and security policy â€" the cooperation with Russia in this format and in this context was extremely positive. All sides had, obviously, a strong political reason to facilitate this agreement, to achieve it, and Russia played a role. There are other issues on which the European Union and Russia, among others, are working together. Think, for example, in the Middle East peace process, in which the European Union, the United States, Russia and the United Nations are working together in the Quartet. Things are up and running, our cooperation is going well. In relation to the peace process in the Middle East, there is still some work to be done, but the format works well. This means that our cooperation in global and regional issues important is possible and I think we should explore this strand.
