Mecca: 107 killed and more than 230 injured in crane collapse

Several rescue teams were immediately sent to the scene.

According to Al-Arabiya television, the crane dropped due to strong sandstorms that have hit the region in recent days.

In social networks, rumor has it that the crane was struck by lightning.

The authorities do not advance any explanation of the causes of the accident.

On Friday, a holy day for Muslims, the great mosque of Mecca used to be filled with faithful. The two weeks of the Haj, the annual holy pilgrimage of Muslims.

In Mecca are expected millions of pilgrims, many of whom are already in place.

The temple is in the works to expand: will have a surface area of 400,000 square meters and can accommodate 2.2 million pilgrims simultaneously.

The mosque, whose oldest part dates back to the 16th century, is surrounded by cranes, used in construction.
