Opposition wins Taiwan presidential

The leader of the main opposition party, the Democratic Progressive Party, which reaches a historic victory, will have achieved around 60% of the votes against 30. Eric Chu, supported by the head of State at the end of the mandate, has taken the defeat in a vote that could jeopardise the maintenance of peace with China. Beijing considers the island as a breakaway province that can be retaken by force if necessary.

Tsai Ing-wen, the f irst woman President of this State, is in favour of maintaining independence from China. The growing support for the opposition, culminating with this victory may have a bitter taste for Taiwan whose economy depends on exports to China which is also the main partner to the level of investments.
