Taiwan: opposition may be about to conquer the power

Some projections point to the defeat of the nationalist party of the outgoing President, Ma Ying-jeou and his candidate Eric Chu.

To confirm the projections, the victory may fit the opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen, in favour of maintaining independence from China.

If confirmed, will be the first time that the island will have a woman President.

Since 2014 that the opposition has been enjoying increasing support, in particular among the younger population.

Beijing, for its part, has already made it clear that the opposition victory could threaten the peace. China considers the island a breakaway province that can be retaken by force if necessary.
