According to the law, the Prime Minister may resign or ask the President of Serbia, Tomislav Nikolic, former President and founder of SNS, to dissolve Parliament and call elections. "My decision is that we will have elections (...) Serbia needs 4 more years of stability to be ready to join the European Union (EU), "said Vucic.

The Prime Minister explained that Serbia must "until 2020, complete the process of reforms and stand at the gates" of EU membership. In late December, Serbia opened the first two chapters of the accession negotiations to the European bloc, after the normalization of its relations with Kosovo.
