Ukraine declares porcine fever outbreak as "epidemic"

Ukrainian health authorities said that 122 people have died of swine flu since the outbreak was detected, although they have not specified the percentage of victims of the H1N1 virus.

In a Kiev hospital, a patient explains that "had a temperature of almost 40 degrees and coughed" and says that his wife called an ambulance "when he lost" practically the senses ".

Since December, there have been dozens of cases of swine flu also in Russia, Armenia, in Georgia and Iran.

An infectious disease specialist says that "the virus has a deadly severe progression. It can cause pneumonia and lead to death. And, unfortunately, can appear either in Ukraine, as in the rest o f Europe or the United States. The virus doesn't care of nationalities ".

The Government put forward emergency measures to try to contain the epidemic. The city of Kiev has imposed the use of protective masks for civil servants.
