Study suggests link between virus Zika and microcephaly

A North American scientific study published this Friday will be the first scientific proof of a biological link between the virus Zika and microcephaly.

Scientists at the Johns Hopkins University, in the United States, stated that laboratory tests revealed that the Zika attacks and destroys brain cells in human development.

So far, despite strong suspicions, had not proved a causal link between the virus and the large number of cases of microcephaly recorded particularly in Brazil, one of the South American countries with one of the most important foci of the epidemic.

Cautious, scientists explain, however, that the study "does not prove definitively that the virus Zika leads to microcephaly".
