Torrential rains leave thousands homeless in Peru

The rainy season, coupled with rising ocean temperatures â€" the phenomenon "El Niño" â€" provoked dozens of landslides, submerging several villages in 16 regions of the country.

At least two people died and about 3000 were displaced when the violent storms destroyed 65 bridges and roads.

Almost a thousand military was mobilized to try to reopen the access road to the capital, submerged by the waters of the river Rímac, so the main railway line in the region.

In the North of the country, the military try to also assist the tens of thousands of people affected by the rising waters in coastal areas of Tumbes and Piura.
