The last case to rekindle outrage was the strangulation and stabbing of 20-year-old Rina, Shimabukuro. Before, had been raped by a civil servant of the American military base of Futenma.

In 1995, the rape of a 12-year-old child by 3 American soldiers massive protests and raised the possibility of change of location of Futenma base, since it is in a residential area.

The chance of relocation is maintained by the Governments of both countries, but the population and the authorities in Okinawa are worried that the presence of 50 1000 American citizens, of which 30 1000 are military and civilian employees in military bases are an unfair burden to bear at any point of the island.
