Quebec: civil servants ask for right to wear religious symbols

In Montreal, Canada, thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the proposed law of the province of Quebec, which prohibits the use of religious symbols ostentatórios civil servants.

The law prohibits the use of the Islamic veil, the Jewish yarmulke, crucifixes too large or turbans to all workers from schools, hospitals, prisons and other State institutions.

The demonstration was attended by a strong presence of the Muslim community.

The law has not yet been voted on by Parliament in the province. Most likely have to be revised, as has the opposition of all federal parties. Only the pro-independence party in power in Quebec, the Parti Québecois, supports the text.

The France applies a similar law since 2004, but that only applies to schools. In 2010 was voted another law, which prohibits the use of the full veil in public spaces.
