Italy criticizes the EU border and migration policy after sinking of Lampedusa

The Italian Interior Minister calls for greater EU involvement in border control and in the accommodation of illegal immigrants. After having visited the island of Lampedusa, Angelino Alfano, did this morning the situation yesterday of the shipwreck, in front of the deputies in Parliament in Rome.

"A State won't exist when does not protect its borders. Europe must decide whether it wants to be or not to be, if you want to protect its borders and its citizens, but also wants to protect the death those who cross our borders unprotected, transported by traffickers without any security, "said Alfano.

The Minister, who rejects change the current national legislation seen as quite restrictive on immigration, asks Brussels to review the Dublin regulation which assigns to each Member State the responsibility of welcoming illegal immigrants.

The Minister should evoke the theme during the European Council of Ministers of the Interior and of Justice, in Luxembourg, at the beginning of next week.

Alfano rejects, however, reviewing the current legislation that considers as a crime any assistance to illegal immigrants, even in a situation of danger, which could explain why three fishing vessels in the area would not have provided immediate aid to hundreds of shipwrecked.
