Japan: explosion at Mitsubishi Materials plant makes 5 dead

The accident was caused by a chemical reaction during maintenance operations of a heat exchanger the premises of Mitsubishi Materials.

The explosion occurred in the early afternoon in Yokkaichi, about 300 miles southwest of Tokyo, in Mie Prefecture, in Central Japan.

At the time of the accident, 170 people were working on the premises. The operations have been immediately suspended in the factory.

The unit produces solar panels and components for the automotive industry, among other silicon-based materials.

The factory has been closed for a few months in 2010 for generating high pressure gases without having authorization to do so.

The Mitsubish Materials employs 22 thousand people around the world.
