Ukraine: Continues the crisis created by the referendum in Crimea

In the aftermath of the referendum in Crimea, President Barack Obama ruled out u.s. military involvement in the Ukraine.

While the tension between the European Union and Russia remains, Moscow continues to defend the legitimacy of the action of this autonomous Peninsula:

"Yesterday there was a historic event. The Union of people of Crimea and Russia who hoped for this for 60 years. Using international law and a democratic process, without any external pressure, through democratic referendum, the Crimean people understood the right to self-determination, enshrined in all the letters of the United Nations and international acts, "said Vitaly Churkin, Russia's Ambassador to the UN.

The Secretary General of NATO accuses Russia of throwing away the international rules and create the greatest threat to European security since the end of the cold war:

"The annexation of Crimea, through a so-called referendum, held at gunpoint, is illegal and illegitimate, and undermines all efforts to find a peaceful and political solution," said Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

In meetings this Thursday and Friday, EU leaders will consider increasing the number of persons concerned by the sanctions related to the Ukrainian issue and will also sign, in part, an association agreement with the interim Government of Ukraine.
