Ukraine: Situation in the Crimea remains tense

Despite diplomatic efforts to reduce the crisis, the situation in the Crimea remains tense.

In Feodosiya, about 100 kilometers from Sevastopol, a Ukrainian army barracks was besieged by troops loyal to Moscow, supported by pró-russos demonstrators.

Two civilians were detained and taken to the interior of the premises, accused of belonging to the pro-Russian militias and of trying to sabotage the water supply and electricity to the base.

Overseas troops loyal to Moscow stressed however the positions to prevent the supply of Ukrainian soldiers.

Hours earlier, at the airport of Belbek, controlled by pro-Russian forces, warning shots were fired when about 300 Ukrainian soldiers tried to regain control of the tactical air Brigade 204, equipped with MiG-29 fighters.

After hours of tension, the Ukrainians withdrew.
