Iraq: Shiites match the appeal of Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani

In Iraq hundreds of Shiites have joined the security forces in the fight against militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant that dominate large areas of the territory north of the capital.

The mobilization, urged by the country's main Shiite cleric, took on a sectarian dimension that threatens to intensify the Sunni-Shiite conflict in a nation already divided by religious fervor.

"The Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called for holy war and we are here for that. We don't want to pay, we don't want anything. We left everything behind. We left our families and we came for the holy war, "said a volunteer.

Images disclosed on Sunday by the Iraqi Defense Ministry show airstrikes the positions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Salahudin and Mosul, North of Baghdad, without however they deal with dates of the attacks.
