AKINCI promise reunification of Cyprus

The reunification of Cyprus. Is the objective outlined by the new President of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Mustafa Akinci won more than 60 percent of the vote in Sunday's elections, defeating the current nationalist leader, Dervis Eroglu.

In the first speech after victory, the moderate left of 67 years promised to initiate a real change.

During the election campaign, Akinci pledged to work on a peace settlement for the island which is divided since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

"We are very happy and we want to send a message to our Greek-Cypriots compatriots: join us on reunification of the island." says a woman.

Nicosia has suspended the talks in October 2014, after the Government of Turkey have sent ships to the island's exclusive maritime zone, aiming to explore natural gas in the region.
