Belarus: Lukashenko takes possession of fifth term

Considered by the United States as the "last dictator of Europe", Lukashenko was reelected on October 11 with 83.47 percent of the vote in some elections boycotted by the opposition, and criticized Western observers unanimously.

However, despite the dissenting opinion of Washington and the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe, the European Union decided in the aftermath of the ballot, raising a large part of economic sanctions to Belarus, after considering that the Electoral Act took place without incident.

The Brussels decision was also motivated by the improving diplomatic relations with Minsk and the release, 22 August, political prisoners, which included the leader of the opposition, Nicolai Statkewitch.
