Italian Navy rescues more than 500 migrants off the coast of Libya

Stunning images that show the sinking of a boat of migrants off the coast of Libya resulting in five dead. The fast intervention of the Italian Guard allowed save 562 people after a dramatic sequence caused by the mass movement of passengers from one place to another.

According to the latest data from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on May 22, combined with the Italian aid, about 40,000 people arrived on the Italian coast since the beginning of the year.

During the same period, 1,370 migrants and refugees died before arriving to Europe across the Mediterranean, 24% less than in the same period last year (1792), said Tuesday the Organization International Organization for Migration (IOM).
