Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami dies in Paris

Kiarostami was suffering from cancer and followed a treatment in the French capital.

Was awarded several international awards, including the Palme d'Or in 1997 film taste of cherry and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1999, for "the wind will carry us".

Living since 2010 in France, Kiarostami used to say that a tree uprooted to the land where he was born never give the same fruit.

Was recently invited by the Academy of Hollywood, which assigns the Oscars, to join a group of new members, the Organization's reaction to criticism for the lack of diversity at the Oscars.
