Erich Priebke, the former captain of the "Waffen SS" elite forces of Hitler, died Friday in Rome, after 15 years under house arrest in the Italian capital.Priebke was one of the last Nazi war criminals still alive and had celebrated the 100 years of age at the end of July.The former nazi was convicted in 1998 by Italian justice to a term of life imprisonment, for participating in the massacre of the Ardeatinas caves, committed in Rome in March 1944 in which 335 Italian civilians were killed. The victims, including 75 Jews, were executed with a shot to the back of the head, as a reprisal for a resistance attack on an SS unit of Hitler.Held in Argentina in 1994, where he lived quietly for more than 40 years, was extradited to Italy the following year. During the trial, Priebke â" who was nicknamed "Butcher" â" never showed remorse.In 1999 was allowed to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest for health reasons.
