Vietnam says goodbye to general Vo Nguyen Giap

Vietnam says goodbye to the last Communist hero the country with concerts cancelled, enclosed gardens and parks and even the television shows replaced by patriotic music, for two days of national mourning.

Funeral ceremonies in honor of general Vo Nguyen Giap started this Friday, in Hanoi, a week after the death of the military at the age of 102.

Front of the general, more than 100 thousand people paraded in recent days to pay their last respects before the body was exposed, this Saturday, in the capital.

"I am very sad. They won't let me in the House of general to light incense, but I'm here at the door, and as many who have come this far, I'm really moved and I want to express my respect for the general and his family, "says a resident of Hanoi.

An emotion that, for most Vietnamese, is connected to two military victories, led by general, in 1954, against the troops of the French colonial power and then, in 1975, in the face of u.s. troops.

Two victories which enabled and strengthened the independence of the country, transforming the old general a national symbol.

The funeral takes place on Sunday in the village, military Christmas in Quang Binh province, in the center of the country.
