Organisation for the prohibition of chemical weapons WINS Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2013 is the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons. The announcement was made by Thorbjorn Jagland, the Chairman of the Nobel Committee.The Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons, established in 1997, is little known to the general public. However, it is this body that brings together almost all countries of the world, except North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan and Angola, which is currently overseeing the dismantling of the chemical arsenal of Syria.Directed by Turkish diplomat Ahmet Ãzümcü and headquartered in the Dutch city of the Hague, the organisation has as its main mission to verify the destruction of all existing chemical weapons and to take all necessary measures to put an end to their manufacture.The Nobel Peace Prize consists of a gold medal, a diploma and a cheque for eight million kroner, the equivalent of 910 thousand euros.The award ceremony will take place, as every year, on 10 December, the date of the anniversary of the death of the prize's creator, Alfred Nobel, died in 1896.
