Severe poverty reaches three million Spaniards

More than three million Spaniards living in severe poverty, i.e. subsist with 307 euros per month. The incidence of the phenomenon has doubled since the start of the financial crisis in 2008. These alarming data are from the Observatory of Social reality presented Thursday by the Spanish Caritas. The Organization notes that the gap between those who have access to goods and services and the have-nots is increasing in Spanish society."I had to resort to soup kitchen because only work on Saturday and Sunday in a nursing home and gain 320 euros"."I'm a long time without a job and get the minimum allowance".For the social assistance agencies, the diagnosis is simple:"The fact of having to be social canteens and that we have been forced to open more, is the failure of a company, the failure of all social policies that we've had in recent years", says the head of a social canteen.Only in 2012, the Spanish Caritas gave assistance to almost two million people: families in situations of serious insecurity caused by the crisis, elderly, children and immigrants. A total of 276 million euros in funds, mostly from private donations.
